Now Hiring - Commission Director

OC Human Relations is hiring a Commission Director, a management position under the supervision of the CEO. The Director is the lead staff support to the Orange County Human Relations Commission, a public agency founded by the OC Board of Supervisors in collaboration with the OC League of Cities in 1971 with a mission to eliminate prejudice, intolerance and discrimination. The Commission is funded by a General Fund grant from the County of Orange that funds about 3 professional staff led by the Director.

Anti-Muslim and LGBT bias reports on the rise in OC

OC Human Relations found that reports of hate crimes in Orange County rose 10% in 2015. The most frequent target, according to the tally, was the LGBT community with 11 incidents, four of them aimed at people who are transgender. Hate incidents increased dramatically, from 14 in 2014 to 43 in 2015, mainly targeting Muslims and those thought to be Muslim, including the Sikh community.

San Bernardino Attack Fueled Jump in Local Hate Incidents Against Muslims

Hate-motivated incidents against Muslims in Orange County and throughout Southern California skyrocketed last year, with the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino driving the increase, according to organizations that track the incidents. “There was a clear statewide increase in the targeting of Muslims for hate and bigotry,” Rusty Kennedy said. “There is no doubt.”

Amin David, Legendary OC Latino-Rights Activist, Passes Away

The first chair of the Orange County Human Relations Commission, Amin David, has died at the age of 83. The longtime Anaheim resident was a founding member of Los Amigos, the Orange County Communities Organized for Responsible Development and Orange County Community Housing Corporation and recently was an active member of the Anaheim police chief’s advisory board.

Commission Condemns Terrorist Attacks in Belgium

In a statement, the OC Human Relations Commission said that in the face of the heinous terrorist attacks on innocent people in Belgium its first thoughts and prayers go out to victims lost and suffering from this senseless act of violence. The Commission urged the community to be thoughtful and reasoned in its reactions and to avoid provoking misdirected hate or sweeping measures that victimize innocent people.
