As anniversary of the violence and hate in Charlottesville approaches, we at OC Human Relations continue to stand against hate, white supremacy and bigotry in every form and in solidarity with people and communities who are the targets of hate speech and hate crimes.

Last month, members of Proud Boys, the national far-right men-only group with a strong Southern California presence, were expelled from a downtown Los Angeles bar after a dust-up with Antifa, a group of anti-fascist protesters. The Proud Boys have been labeled as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for their anti-Muslim and misogynistic rhetoric, and for appearing with other hate groups at extremist rallies such as “Unite the Right.”

According to a report from Cal State San Bernardino’s Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism hate crimes rose 12.5% in the 10 largest US cities in 2017.

“One of the most popular liberal post-racial ideas is the idea that the fundamental problem is class and not race, and clearly this study explodes that idea,” said Ibram Kendi, a professor and director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University. “But for whatever reason, we’re unwilling to stare racism in the face.”

Christian Picciolini was 14 years old when he attended the first gathering of what would become the Hammerskin Nation, a violent, white-power skinhead group. Looking back, he describes his introduction to the group as receiving a “lifeline of acceptance.”
