Monthly Summary of Activities: November 2016
Police‐Community Relations
Sheriff’s Academy Training – On 11/3 staff provided a 4‐hour diverse community relations training for over 40 recruits on working in diverse communities.
Santa Ana Police‐Community Dialogue – Chief Rojas of SAPD approved the dialogues. On 11/22 staff met with Commander Ibarra to set dates for the dialogue sessions in January. The dialogues will include members of the Cedar-Evergreen Neighborhood, SAPD, KidWorks and city staff.
Tustin Police‐Youth Dialogues – Chief Celano of TPD has approved dialogues for the department and invited local schools to participate. The dialogues will take place in early 2017.
Implicit Bias – Staff will pilot an Implicit Bias Training with the OC Department of Children Services in January and use the experience to develop a similar training for law enforcement.
Police‐Community Reconciliation Program – To date, staff has handled 15 cases this year, including 2 in November.
Hate Crime – In November the Commission documented 19 hate incidents and 2 hate crimes. Primary targets were Latinos, Muslims and LGBT community.
Intergroup Relations
Kennedy Commission – On 11/2 staff attended the Kennedy Commission’s Annual Affordable Housing Banquet and presented an award to the Sisters of St. Joseph.
Sheriff’s Interfaith Advisory Board – On 11/7 staff supported the bi‐monthly convening by helping to develop the agenda and lead the meeting. The Commission is assisting the Sheriff’s Interfaith Board in organizing follow‐up on the Diverse Communities/Police/Interfaith Unity Rally in August.
SikhLens – On 11/17 staff attended the opening night of the SikhLens Film Festival at Chapman University.
Bullying – On 11/28 & 29 staff provided anti‐bullying workshops to staff at a local shelter, staff also responded to 2 calls for support from parents whose children were being bullied.
Hate Crime Outreach – On 11/30 staff provided an educational workshop in Spanish on hate crime in Huntington Beach.
Transgender Listening Session – As follow‐up to the Listening Session, staff attended multiple Trans Remembrance events.
Community Capacity Building
Bishop/Manor Task Force – On 11/15 staff attended the Bishop Manor Task Force in Santa Ana to support resident efforts to build community.
Cedar/Evergreen Neighborhood – On 11/7 & 11/19 staff attended neighborhood meetings to prepare for the upcoming police‐community dialogues.
