This position serves as support staff to the Human Relations Commission and is funded through a 3-year contract with the County of Orange with the possibility of a fourth-year extension. The funding and scope of work are subject to change in the direction of the County and/or Commission.
The current scope of work focuses on increasing awareness about bias-motivated hate trends in Orange County, bringing people together around the goal of reducing bias-motivated hate through community-centered prevention strategies, and coordinating educational/experiential opportunities that promote community, solidarity, allyship and belonging.


GENERAL DUTIES
Under the general supervision of the Executive Director of Human Relations Commission or designee, the implementation of Commission contract activities throughout the County includes, but are not limited to:

Community Centered Hate Prevention (30%)

  • Co-lead the OC Hate Prevention Network – a multi-agency collaborative leading preventative and awareness efforts on bias-motivated hate across Orange County
  • Develop community-centered hate prevention plan that focuses on innovation, collaboration, and depth of impact.
  • Communicate effectively with partner organizations to promote collaboration, cohesiveness and problem solving.
  • Coordinate, in partnership with community organizations, educational workshops, activities, training, events, etc. that prevent bias-motivated hate in diverse communities and promotes belonging throughout the County.

Relationship & Community Building Support (30%)

  • Serve as spokesperson responsible for sharing organizational and team vision with the local community by responding to requests from media or other stakeholders that may include being a speaker, panelist, interviewee, information source, etc.
  • Build and maintain relationships with members of the community, key individuals, and other organizations.
  • Engage with diverse communities via community meetings, large events, and other forums to broaden knowledge and expertise in human relations issues.

Bias-Motivate Hate Activity Tracking & Reporting (25%)

  • Collect and analyze hate crimes and hate incidents data to produce the annual Hate Crime Report
  • Lead team and various workgroups in the analysis of quantitative and qualitative hate crime and hate incident data.
  • Co-lead the planning for the annual Hate Crimes Report release event in September.

General Administrative Tasks (15%)

  • Assist in program development and evaluation.
  • Support and coordinate strategic community-based prevention activities with Community Building team members to promote anti-hate and belonging.
  • Prepare monthly/quarterly reports on program activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years of increasing experience demonstrating the knowledge and abilities below

Intermediate to Advanced Knowledge of:

  • Hate violence and hate crime laws;
  • Human and civil rights issues that different racial, ethnic, religious, LGBTQ+, immigrant communities, among others, are facing.
  • Community organizing and relationship building methods and models.
  • Data analysis and advance report writing skills
  • Workshop development, facilitation and training skills;
  • Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and creative platforms;
  • Collaboration, mentoring, and team building methods/techniques.

Introductory Knowledge of::

  • Methods teaching cross-cultural relations and respect towards all people regardless of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, age, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or marital status.
  • Dynamics of intergroup relations, problem solving techniques, mediation/conciliation methods.
  • Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices and programming, including knowledge of racial justice, social justice, and intersectionality of hate.
  • Bias-related community crisis response.

Ability to:

  • Facilitate dialogues, trainings, and workshops alone or with a partner.
  • Work and communicate with our diverse staff, volunteers, and community members at large.
  • Use Emotional Intelligence in working with sensitive problems involving divergent viewpoints.
  • Name and navigate power dynamics resulting from discomfort at all organizational levels.
  • Respond with empathy, respect and confidentiality during sensitive situations involving hate crimes and hate incidents.
  • Work with businesses, schools, law enforcement agencies, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations, and other community members in a respectful and diplomatic manner.
  • Work independently, be well organized and able to work on multiple projects.
  • Prepare comprehensive written and oral reports.
  • Respond to occasional high-profile bias-related incidents after hours and on weekends.

EMPLOYMENT PACKAGE

The annual salary range is: $57,000 – $64,000
Full benefits including health, dental, 401(k), life insurance, 9 sick days, 16 paid holidays, 10 paid vacation days, and others.
